The quilt block, "Rolling Pin", was chosen by the Rewerts because as a
young girl, Dottie visited her grandmother during warm Oklahoma summers.
Early in the cool mornings, they would roll out dough for the pies to be made
with a wooden "rolling pin". As they worked the new day, morning
sun, would shine brightly through the kitchen window. The bright sun rise
colors were incorporated into this block.
The acreage has been in the family since 1980.. The Rewerts purchased the
farm, including 55 acres, from Norman Venenga during the winter of 1980.
Norman was born and raised on the farm, as was his father, Meno, and possibly
even his grandfather. The farm was an original property owned by George
Wells, which is the founder of Wellsburg.
It is believed that the barn was built in the early 1920's to replace a prior
structure. The barn itself has self-supporting rafters with no crossbeams
in the hay loft. The roof style is called "traditional
gable". It was built and used as a dairy facility until the mid
1970's. The interior of the barn was then converted to a tool shop and
equipment storage. The barn had milking stalls and a side milkroom used
for milk coolers. A full over-head hay loft was located under the high
pitched roof. The barn actually faces north, with its real south side
(which is the side the quilt block is located on) facing the D-25 roadway.
"Rolling Pin" was mounted with the help of Alliant Energy
on July 21, 2008.
