The "Maple
Leaf" quilt block at the Kruse Christmas Farm
northeast of Grundy Center is
displayed on the front of this 1952
machine shed. Loren's father, John H.
Kruse, was proud to
have this new machine shed, because he believed machinery
should always be stored inside. This particular machine shed
has served
as the home for quite a bit of farm equipment,
including the Kruse family's H
and M Farmall
tractors, and mounted 2-row ear corn picker.
It also housed
a 1951 Dodge pickup, and served as a
modest farm shop. Loren remembers
the sound of the
rolling doors as his father shut them at the end of the day,
which meant that work and chores were done, and Loren
could bounce his rubber
ball off the doors and roof while
pretending to be Willie Mays!
The Kruse family serves as the sponsor for their "Maple Leaf"
quilt
block, which was painted with Diamond Vogel paint as a part of the Paint Iowa
Beautiful grant program. (A Christmas Tree block, painted by the Kruse
family, also appears at the Kruse farm to represent the Christmas trees that are
grown there. However, this block is not officially a part of the Barn
Quilts of Grundy County.)
