When Darwin's
great-grandfather came to Iowa from East Friesland (Germany), he settled in
Grundy County. This farm has been in the Engelkes family since 1892, and the
corncrib was built sometime in the 1930s. The quilt block displayed here is
called "Log Cabin," and it is a block rich in symbolism. The Log
Cabin quilt block is built in strips (logs) around a center square. This center
square is traditionally painted red, representing the hearth in a home. Half of
the surrounding strips are dark-colored, and half are lighter-colored,
symbolizing the joys and sorrows present in home life. The painting of
this quilt block was sponsored by Peoples
Savings Bank in Wellsburg. |
