The Brownlies purchased
this farm in October of 2003 from the Ben Juchems family,
who had owned it since 1958. The farm was homesteaded by John Benson
prior to
1867, and the Benson cemetery lies just to the north of the property. The
barn on
which the “Variable Star” quilt block is displayed was built around 1931,
and was
originally used tostable horses on one side and cattle on the other, with an
opening in the center for loose hay. The Juchems family later converted the barn for
hogs. It is currently being used for storage and a workshop, and the Brownlies have plans to
have a shop in the front. They also plan to have several small businesses
open on
their property over the next few years. With over 20 outbuildings here,
they will
certainly have plenty of room! The painting of this quilt block was sponsored
with
the proceeds from a quilt and stained glass raffle held in 2005. Special
thanks to
John Padget for donating a beautiful stained-glass panel, and
Scrapyard Needle Art for donating a wonderful quilt!
