Flater's barn has been in the family since Eileen's grandfather purchased
the acreage in 1943 by Ben Grimmius. The barn was built in 1920
and was originally used as a dairy barn in the 1940-50s, housed beef cattle,
horses, sheep and goats and is currently used to house miniature
donkeys and horses. The Flater family chose "County Fair
Variation" because of their strong 4-H activity. All four of Ron
& Eileen's children were long-time members of the county 4-H.
Eileen has been a 4-H youth committee and leader for over 35 years and Ron
has been a fair board member since the 1980s. The boys met their wives
through 4-H, and the youngest proposed to his wife at the county fair.
Their son, Michael, and his wife Lindee, made and painted the quilt block in
Ohio and brought it home during Christmas 2008. "County Fair
Variation" was mounted in January 2009.
